Assam: After Floods, Farmers Commit Suicide


Guwahati: Assam is facing a big problem again. After the floods, now farmers have started to committing suicide in the state. According to the sources, Hiloram Pator, a peasant from the Aambagan area in Morigaon, is considering moving to the state capital, around 58 km from his village, in search of a different livelihood.
While his wife said that the suicides by the two farmers who lost everything in the recent floods have left everyone shocked. I don’t want a similar fate for my family. We want to leave this place.

People panic because of suicides

According to the reports, it is said that many locals here are in a state of panic because of the two suicides in the last week of July.

One is identified as Kushal Nath, the farmer who killed himself on July 23 at the nearby Bordubatop village, and another known as Petaal Chauhan, the farmer from Aambagan who killed himself on July 25, took the extreme step because they had lost all assets in the floods.

An official said that Suicides by farmers in the state have gone up in recent years.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), this year around 2,09,052 hectares of crop land has been ravaged by the floods.
