The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio has won the vote of confidence in the Assembly of Nagaland on Tuesday. CM Neiphiu is currently heading the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA).
Rio obtained 33 votes out of the 59 votes polled by the state assembly members and thus, proved his majority on the floor of the House. Rest of the 26 legislators who belong to Naga People’s Front (NPF), voted against the Chief Minister Rio in the first session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on March 13. Earlier, after the results were declared for the assembly election of Nagaland, the Governor of the state, PB Acharya had requested Rio to prove his majority on the floor of the House on or before March 16.
Mmhonlumo Kikon who has been the pro-tem speaker, and has presided over the first session. On the other hand, Vikho-o Yhoshu has been appointed as the new NLA Speaker. In the meantime, Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu has also been elected by the first session of the 13th Nagaland Assembly as the Speaker of the House. Mr. Yhoshu belongs to the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP). The opposition party Naga People’s Front had fielded the former speaker Dr. Imtiwapang against the PDA’s nomination of Yhoshu for the election of the post. The election for the speaker resulted in the win of Yhoshu who defeated the NPF’s candidate Dr. Imtiwapang by 7 votes. The election was carried by the secret ballot process.
So the stats of the current Nagaland Assembly is, the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) has got 34 MLAs sitting in the 60-member house. The partners of PDA, NDPP has 18 members, BJP has got 12, JD (U) has got 1, and the NPP has got 2 MLAs along with one independent MLA in the assembly.
The Nagaland Assembly is going to have a long break from March 14 to 21 and is set to conclude the presentation and passage of budget on March 22.
