Tripura has received a new BJP-IPFT coalition government in the state. After the formation of the government, the first cabinet meeting surfaced with an order from the Chief Minister Biplab Deb, who ordered a CBI investigation into the murder case of two journalists in the state who were brutally killed last year.

Journalists’ Forum welcomed the move

Last year, the state has observed two brutal murder cases of Journalists from state media. One of them was Shantanu Bhowmick, who was thrashed and killed by the mob during a clash between IPFT and CPIM workers.

Another was the Sudip Dutta Bhaumik, who was shot dead by the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) trooper near the headquarters during an altercation in Bodhjung Nagar in Tripura.

The matter of both the killing was pending and their families are seeking justice from the state government.

As now the state has received a new government, the newly elected Chief Minister has ordered a probe by the Crime Branch of Investigation(CBI).

The order came after the first cabinet meeting held in the state after the formation of the government in Tripura.

As the decision of CBI probe surfaced, the agitation that was conducted by the Tripura Protection of Journalists’ Forum in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan for 171 days has been officially withdrawn.

The agitation was withdrawn in the presence of the Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb, Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath and the Forum’s President Subal Kumar Dey.

During this withdrawal ceremony, the Chief Minister said, “Tripura’s journalists have played a huge role in the formation of this government. Owing to your (journalists) efforts, the people of Tripura have been awakened.”

At least 32 journalists have been murdered in the North East in the last thirty years. Out of these, 24 were in Assam, six were in Manipur and two in Tripura.

Out of these, the murder of Shantanu Bhowmick was the most brutal one as he was on his duty to cover the clash between the two insurgent groups.

He was thrashed by the mob, his clothes were torn off and the fierce crowd beat him to death. During his postpartum, several injuries were reported by the doctors.

Press Jacket introduced by the police

After the incidence of brutally killing a Journalist, Tripura Police officially distributed a special jacket to every print and electronic media house based in Agartala.

Keeping in view of the safety and proper identification of the journalists, while covering an insurgency or any other critical situation in the region, Tripura Police has come up with this initiative.

On the occasion, DGP Shukla said that this jacket would be helpful in identifying the media persons among the mobs and huge public gatherings.

Earlier, there were incidents where media persons were attacked by the mob including the police officials, he said.

Shukla further informed about the confusion that erupts during protests and rallies in the region due to the mass gathering.

The reason why police of the state came up with the idea of distributing the jackets to the people related to the media. The aim of the police is to highlight the media persons for their safety while covering the insurgency.
